...does political analysis. seriously?
I have a quick question. I have now heard a couple of newsy statements about the resignation of Abe as being a shock to the LDP and that now they are scrambling to "right" the sinking ship. Do you think this is an accurate statement or has there been a "closed door" deal in the works for more than a few days?
PS-Aso, Taro-san's dreams might be coming true at the end of it all, even with the crooked smile of his (no implication intended ;-)
Skippy Tastes Better than Jiff, I agree. As for your question, it appears that Mr. Abe had appeared weary, weakened, and distracted since his return from the APEC Summit in Australia, and the main figures had been trying to bolster his spirits. But all the media reports indicate that at a minimum the timing of his resignation took everybody by surprise. And tactically speaking, Mr. Abe could have done little more to make himself and the LDP look bad. In sum, even if everybody was beginning to realize that he would not last past the year's end and likely leave sooner rather than later, this comic-tragic ending could not have been part of any deal. And yes, I agree. It is Mr. Aso's to lose, and there is little chance that he will.
Incidentally, if you google Unterschmuck, you will actually get hits. And I was hoping that I could copyright the word…
